I ( One of the largest gatherings yet I j held in connexion with the eontenil j ni.-il took place today at Maketu. the h | site of Hie landing of Hie Arawa canoe, e I when in the presence of a gathering s j of upward of -1909 Maoris and pakev i has. a memorial cairn marking the jj site of the lauding and a specially con--7 ■ slrueted access roadway leading to the I cairn, were oliieially opened. I !• Among the official visitors present i were the Hons. AV. Nash. F. Langstone j ' and I’. C. AA'ebb, Mr. Doidge. Al. I’.. Mr. t F. AV. Mundt, chairman of the Tan- , ranga County Council; Mr. T. Jackson. * mayor of Rotorua : Mr. 11. Tai Mitchell. j 1 C.M.G.. chairman of the Arawa Trust , Board: and the Rt. Rev. F. A Bennett. ; Bishop of Aotearort. k ■ The access road was first declared l open by Mr. Webb, after which Mr. i Langstone unveiled the cairn. which . I was then dedicated in Maori by Bish- , I mi Bennett. A large Maori hangi then .I- took place, at which official gucsl.- were . ; I‘iilertained. The gathering included I 1 representatives of all snb-t rilies i| of Te Arawa. aud many old pakeha 1 residents of Hie district. including ! some who arrived at Tauranga 09 years I ago by Hie ship Lady Jocelyn.
