HOLIDAY ACCIDENTS
Decline Of Deaths In Victoria (Received January 2, 9.50 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 2. The Christmas and New Year holiday season ended with a total of 4o deaths from accidents, compared with 60 last year. Road accidents caused 22, compared with; 30 last year, and drownings nine, compared with 21. The decline in road deaths is attributed by the police to greater road courtesy as a result of an intensive pre-holiday campaign. The police . traffic control superintendent says he • noticed a definite improvement in road manners this year. “Road users realize it is better to be careful than to spend tlie holidays in hospital,” lie said. “1 think tlie improvement is due to tlie persistent education of roadusers.” Tlie position is all the more satisfactory, because an unbroken spell of perfect weather has been experienced throughout tlie holiday period, attracting a vast number of cars to tho roads.
