FAKE FIRE ALARMS
Five In Palmerston North Last Weekend
Dominion Special Service. PADMJEJtSTON N., January 2. .No fewer than live false alarms were received by the Palmerston North Fire Brigade during New Year weekend. AH the calls were received through the callbox system, indicating that they were maliciously made. 'The first call came from the coruer of Taonui and Maire Streets at 12.5 a.m. on Sunday, and at 12.39 the same morning another call was received from the intersection of Main aud Andrew Young Streets. The second call iu the New Year was received from the box isituated outside the Manawatu Knitting -Mills, .Main Street, which was followed by calls from the corner of Featherston and Ward Streets at 2.32 a.m., and from the corner of Russell Street and Florence Avenue at 2.38 a.in. The cost to (he fire board of these malicious alarms is about £2O. The number of calls received by the brigade during the year was ISO. comipared with 132 of the previous year, the (large increase being partly a result of the large number of calls made at the end of last summer, when a very dry period was experienced.
