WITNESSES FOR CROWN
Higher Scale Of Expenses The scale of expenses paid to witnesses appearing for the Crown iu criminal cases is increased by regulations published with last night's Gazette. The object of the regulations is to liberalize the scale of payments and place them on a more equitable basis. Provision is made for the payment to witnesses of compensation for loss of wages through attendance at Court. The maximum payment in this respect is 13/4 a day. The amount payable to witnesses in respect of travelling expenses has also been increased. Under the old rate a witness who was called upon to be absent from home at night received 11/6, but under the new scale the allowance will be 15/- for a full day of 24 hours.
