The Minister said he hoped to have 10,000 men throughout New Zealand placed on farms (o clear up the laud and bring it into production. Thousands of acres were now overrun by blackberries and scrub. Farmers will be expected to find about 25 per cent, of the cost.
The deputation met the Minister to bring before him the question of land development in Smithland, more particularly in regard to drainage. It had previously met the Minister of Agriculture. Mr. Webb said that drainage was a big problem, but machines could now do work which it was almost impossible to do economically in the past.
