WOOL APPRAISEMENT

Marlborough Clip

Dominion Special Service.

BLENHEIM, December 14,

Wool appraisement began in Blenheim yesterday under the Government’s scheme for the State marketing of wool, and ten appraisers, representative of wool-buying countries, were busily engaged throughout the day. It is expected that the 5200 bales comprising the offering will have been dealt with by this afternoon, when the party will return to Christchurch. The total amount of wool has been reduced by wet weather, which delayed shearing operations, and the majority of it did not open up as attractively as that of last season. The following report was presented by one of the firms whose wool was among the first handled: — “The majority of wools from this district did not open up as attractively as those of last season, being lighter in condition and showing more tenderness, due, no doubt, to the dry autumn experienced. “As expected, the finer woois showed a decided increase in price as compared with that for the previous season, while the stronger grades have not shown the same proportionate increase, but it is hoped, generally speaking, that realizations will prove to be satisfactory to growers. “Marked increases in merino and fine halfbred were registered, the former reaching the high price of 20Jd., while the latter realized up to 17id.” At a rough estimate, the amount which should be paid out to Marlborough. growers in a fortnight’s time will be £75,000.

Five appraisements are to be conducted, and the next one, which will probably be the largest, with something like 7000 bales to be handled, will take place on January 10.
