This is a hot weather story told by a visitor from Mesopotamia at a reunion of returned soldiers in Te Awamutu recently. The climate in Basra, is claimed to be the hottest in all Mesopotamia--or Iraq, as it is officially called now. A prominent citizen of Basra died, and for his sins on earth he was condemned to reside in Hades, but when he applied for admission he was stopped at the entrance by Satan, who demanded to know whence he came. Getting the information that the applicant had resided all his life hi Basra, Satan promptly told him to report to the quartermaster, and obtain three blankets!
