FACTORIES NEAR HOUSES

Complaint To City Council

The whole question of the erection of factories in or near residential areas wanted investigation, said Cr. R. A. Wright at last night’s Wellington City Council meeting. He said that it was a serious matter. There was a paint factory at Miramar which was a nuisance to residents. Night shifts were being worked, and with the noise of the factory and that of motor traffic connected with it, neighbours could get no rest. Surely it was not the council’s job to grant permits for industrial buildings which would be .a nuisance to householders. Cr. R. McKeon suggested the choice of areas as suitable for various types of industrial undertakings. There were some already established which, in their present positions, were a nuisance.

An application to erect a plaster manufacturing factory at Aberdeen Quay was held over pending the furnishing of further particulars. It was decided to inform the applicants that permission would not be granted to erect an overhead conveyor from the Miramar Wharf to the factory.
