WORKS OPENED

o Canterbury Lambs In Good Condition All freezing works in Canterbury except the works in Kaiapoi began killing for the season on Monday. The North Canterbury Co-operative Freezing Company opened its season yesterday. Labour conditions at the works at Belfast, Islington, Westfield and I’areora were smooth on Monday. Most of the establishments had supplies of stock, enabling them to work a threequarter day, and that rate of killing is likely to be maintained for the next fortnight. The lambs coming forward were in very good condition, those from the Christchurch area, averaging 361 b.. being socially commented on. It is not expected that the rush to have stock killed will be so early this season because not the same discrimination in weights is being made. Prices are very even regardless of weights, and producers naturally want to send their stock to the works as heavy as possible. With the rain setting in at the very opening of the killing season, farmers' will be more inclined to hold their lambs for extra conditioning in the next few weeks.
