NO NEW CARDINALS APPOINTED

Pope’s First Consistory VATICAN CITY, December 11. A secret consistory nominated Cardinal Lauri as Camerlengo in the presence of 24 cardinals. Though there were eleven vacancies, the Pope did not appoint any cardinals. This is the first time in the history of the Church: that a Pope has not appointed cardinals at his first consistory. It is believed that this was due to his grief at the international situation, concerning which, in a speech to the consistory, his Holiness instructed the cardinals regarding the stand they must take to combat the spread of atheism and nco-paganism, which he fears will result from the war.

Cardinal Lauri was born in Rome in 1864, and was created a cardinal in 1926. As Camerlengo he has charge of revenues.
