The Dominions Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, acknowledging on behalf of tlie Government numerous Christmas gifts, including one of £lOO,OOO, which has been handed at a ceremony in Johannesburg to the United Kingdom High Commissioner in South. Africa by the chairman of the national committee of the South African Mayors’ Fund, whose objective is to raise £1,000,000 for war objectives, said: “It has been a real, encouragement to the people of Britain to receive this welcome mark of the friendship of the Union of South Africa.” The Government" of Nova Scotia has promised £1 for every £1 subscribed by the public toward the cost of a consignment of apples as a Christmas present to the British troops. A saving of nearly £50,000,000 by a review of commitments in respect of road construction programmes was announced by the Minister of T.ansport, Captain Euan Wallace, at the annual meeting of the Institute of Transport today. DEATH OF W.A.A.F. GIRL Funeral With Full R.A.F. Honours LONDON, December 11. Madge Chambers, aged 20 years, of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, is the first Scottish girl to die on active service in the present war. She was buried with full Royal Air Force honours. Six members of the Royal Air Force acted as pall-bearers. A firing party fired three volleys, and warplanes overhead dipped in salute.

PRICE OF PETROL Another Australian Rise MELBOURNE. December 12. Wholesale and retail prices of petrol have been increased by Id a gallon from today. Super grade will sell at 2/1 and ordinary spirit at 2/- a gallon. This is the fourth Id. increase in petrol prices this year.
