PRICES FOR FRUIT

Hawke’s Bay Association’s

Recommendations BONUS FOR PEAR-GROWERS Dominion Special Service, HASTINGS, December 12. The schedule of groups and prices on which is based the Government’s scheme for the purchase of the 1940 pip-fruit cfop has been accepted by the general conimittee of the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association, with certain recommendations. The association has decided to point out to the Government that pears will be in short supply during the coming season, and that in consequence costs of production would be pro-portionately higher. It will be suggested that, as market prices will definitely be higher, prices in the schedule are rather low for growers with a large proportion of pears. ’Though the recommendations make it clear that for this season the association does not desire to urge alterations in the groupings, the Government is asked to consider granting a bonus to pear growers if, at the end of the season, it is found that any substantial surplus has been made as a result of the marketing of tlie pea rs. When consideration was given to the scheme, it was stressed that Hawke’s Bay growers as a whole would stand behind the schedule for the present season, but would seek a revision of the grouping of varieties at the end of the year if it was found necessary to carry on with the scheme for future seasons.
