What Communism Stands For

Sir—As one of many thousands opposed to the policy being carried out in this Dominion of “spending wi prosperity,” together with the socialization of production, distribution and exchange, I think the Hon. R. Semple is to be commended for liis attack on Communism, notwithstanding the )lo>cow rule is termed the "Union of Socialist Soviet Republics” (U.S.S.R.), Incidentally, there has never been Socialism in Russia, and Fascism and Nazism came into being as reactions to Communism and the disintegrating force of internationalism. Even with the godless alliance between Germany and Russia to uproot all tradition among peaceful and free-dom-loving countries, it. is easy to understand the reason why the fundamental differences between Socialism, Fascism, Communism and Nazism are causing confusion in the minds ol many. There can be no doubt regarding what Communism stands for; it is described in an article on Russia by ■Walter Lippman in the Paris edition of the "Herald-Tribune,” in which the following statement made by Stalin only last year at a session of the Third International in Moscow is quoted. The statement reads as follows: —

The revival of revolutionary action on any scale sufficiently vast will not be possible unless we succeed in utilizing the existing disagreements between the capitalistic countries, so as to precipitate them against each other into armed conflict. The doctrine of Marx-Engels-Lenin teaches us that all war truly generalized should terminate automatically by revolution. The essential work of our party co.mrades in foreign countries consists then, in facilitating the provocation of such a conflict. Those who do not comprehend this know nothing of revolutionary Marxism. I hope that you will remind the comrades, those of you who direct the work. The decisive hour will arrive. Tn spite of all the “isms,” including Socialism, the fact cannot be denied that “Ihe history of freedom is the history of limitation of governmental powers.”—l am, etc., T. A. FRASER. Wellington, December 12.
