GOODS FROM FINLAND
Peasant Work In Wood And Reindeer Horn
A number of interesting examples of peasant handicraft from Finland, perhaps the last shipment of goods from that country before the Russian invasion, arrived at Wellington recently, and are on view on the stall of an exhibitor in the Transport Section of the Centennial Exhibition. They comprise quaint household articles and ornaments of carved wood and reindeer horn, bellows and hatracks, dolls and toys. Their owner states that while there was practically no trade between Finland and' New Zealand, he had contemplated importing such goods if there was a demand, before the developments which had ended, all possibility of such a trade for a considerable period.
Tlie articles have caught the attention of many visitors and the woodcarving excited admiration from Maori craftsmen engaged in similar work in the construction, of their own carved meeting-house, also in the Transport Court.
