SCHOOL HOBBIES

Rongotai College Club Night A dispiav of club activities embracing arts, crafts, radio, aeroplanes, debating, stamps, dramatic work, travel and Meccano attracted an attendance of almost 500 to Rongotai College recently.. Three workrooms in which, the exhibition, was staged were crowded. The walls were covered with sample® of the work done by the art and craft clubs. Selected pupils demonstrated bookbinding and poster painting. In the Meccano models, receiving sets, and model aircraft were displayed. In the school gymnasium two educational films were screened. They were preceded by an address by the master in charge of the travel club. Prepared speeches were given by members of the debating club, G. C. Denby spoke on “Lord Rutherford,” A. R. Stokes on “R. J. Seddon,” E. L. Richards on “Samuel Marsden,” and A. Berry on ‘‘Robert Parker.” A play in six acts concluded the programme, players being J. Telford, P. E. Wixon, J. W. H. Clarke, C. J. Wilson, R. Metcalfe, M. L. Caigon, J. W. N. Cook, W. Boustridge, A. M. Foster, P. Burney. J. G. Hollick and E. A. Cornish. The college orchestra was conducted by Mr. E. Meier. The headmaster, Mr, F. Martyn Renner, said that the teaching of hobbies was more fundamental to education than matriculation. To teaeh hobbies systematically was to give training in the profitable use of leisure time. Among those present were: Mrs, P. Fraser, Mrs. P. J. G. Smith, Miss Smith, Professor W. 11. Gould. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Bailey, Mr. and Mrs. W. 11. P. Walshe, Mrs. H. Q. Bruce, Mr. A. J. McLennan, Mr. aud Mrs. Francis M. Renner, Miss Edwards and Mrs. Elizabeth Carr.
