SHIP DESERTER

AUCKLAND, September 27.
A pica of guilty to a charge of desertin- the steamer Tongariro at Auckland on’ February 14 was entered by John Thomas Dryden Richardson, aged' 29, second cook and baker, iu the Magistrates’ Court today. The police said that Richardson had been working in the Rotorua district, where he was arrested on Monday. The magistrate, Mr. F. 11. Levien, said in view of the fact that Jtieliardson had settled down he would convict mid admit him to probation for 12 months. The magistrate added that it was not the practice to grant probation to every man so charged. “You iliust react to the leniency shown you,” he said. “The records of this Court show that deserters are not always vvbat they should be.”
