SOCIAL AFTERNOON FOR THE BLIND

The Wellington Social Club for the Blind held an afternoon recently at the Red Cross rooms on the occasion of the visit to Wellington of Mr. J. E. Broadfoot, acting-director, and Mr. AV. H. Lunn, of the Institute for the Blind in Auckland. Sixty of the Mind and their friends were present, and were .received (by Mrs. Wilson Downes, assisted (by Mrs. L. Angus and Mrs. B. Steel.

Air. M. iS. Galloway, who introduced Mr. Broadfoot and (Mr. Lunn, said the blind were always interested to hear of the work in Auckland. Mr. Broadfoot outlined recent activities at the institute, mentioning sport specially. The Jubilee Rowing Club, he said, was making good progress and the organization of a club for bowls was in progress. The bowls used would have bells so that the blind could hear their movements. Later in the afternoon those present, many of whom had been students at the institute, had an opportunity of speaking with Air. Broadfoot. Airs. Israel, president of the Braille Club, explained the compiling of the Centennial Braille Book, which would be on view at the Centennial Exhibition.

Musical items were given by Aliss Ethel Gibson and. Aliss Clarice Browne, ■accompanied iby Mrs. D.yer. Airs. Wab'b gave piano solos and Miss Stapp contributed two songs, accompanied by Aliss Keegan.

E.S.U. Bridge Night. Last night the English-Speaking Union held an open bridge night, at which Mrs. J. S. Vinsen was hostess, wearing a frock of black taffeta and a tailored coatee. There were many players and a most enjoyable evening was spent. As usual, lovely flowers were used to decorate the rooms and supper was served. Among those present were: 'Mesdames Fisher, Wheeler, Duncan, Neeve, Kearney, Eberlet, AlcCarcney, Campbell, Hay, Lorne, Hilliker, Preston, Levick, Rose, Glover, Murphy, Searle, Gilbert, Parkhouse, Alisses Gaynor, AlcKnight, Bates, Muir, Cruickshanks, Parker, and Cook. Auxiliary Coin Afternoon.

There was a large attendance of members and friends at a coin afternoon held recently at the Y.M.C.A. by the ladies’ auxiliary (senior division), Mrs. Maunder presiding. A well-stocked table of home-made cakes and other attractive articles did good business, and should add considerably to the funds. Pianoforte solos were given by Miss Nancy Martin, and Aliss Seymour gave enjoyable elocutionary items. A piece of prose, “A Message to the Women of the World,” was read by Airs. Alasters. The feature of the afternoon was a talk given by Mrs. Aston on her recent trip to California. Posies were presented to the guests of honour by Airs. Maunder. A delicious afternoon tea was served.
