OBITUARY

Mr. Thomas Campbell

Mr. Thomas Campbell, who was born in' Karori 85 years ago and lived in that district all his life, died at his home, Edenvale, Campbell Street, on Sunday, after a brief illness. Mr. Campbell could remember Karori when it was-elothed in luxuriant bush. His father, the late Mr. John Campbell, who arrived at Wellington in 1841, had taken up one of the bush sections before there was any road leading over the hills, and it was this old pioneer and his sons who broke the land in, and turned it into a fine dairy farm, the sons living to see the farm cut up into building allotments, the area through which Campbell and Cargill Streets run today. Mr. Thomas Campbell continued to farm these lands till he retired some 30 years ago, since when Karori has ibeen transformed from a farming district into one of Wellington’s most pleasant suburbs. Mr. Campbell always had the interest of the place at heart. He served on the old Karori Borough Council, was a member at one time of the Karori School Committee, was a keen supporter of the Karori Football Club, and was a foundation member of the Karori Bowling Club.

As a pioneer of the district and one of- the founders of the club, Mr. Campbell was called upon to deliver the first bowl at the opening of the season at the Karori Bowling Club for some years, and there was no more constant player in the club, of which he was a life member. It was on the Campbell farm that the first contingent of mounted men for South Africa were trained, an exciting time for Karori and the Campbell family in particular. Mr. Campbell is survived by four sons and one daughter. The sons are Messrs. John Campbell, engineer, Karori; Thomas Campbell, Auckland; Claude Campbell, of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand; and Rev. Father Dalton H. Campbell, Blenheim. The daughter is Miss Kathleen Campbell, Karori. The funeral will take place from St. Mary of the Angels’ Church, Boulcott Street, this morning. Mr. R. K. The mayor of Wanganui, Mr. Rogers, said he knew he would be voicing the feelings of members of the Wanganui City Council and citizens in extending the deepest sympathy to Mrs. Neame’s husband and relatives.

Mrs. Neame, who was born and educated in Wanganui, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Stewart. Through the generous bequest of her first husband, Mr. H. Sarjeant, she was closely associated with the establishment of the art gallery in Wanganui in 1917.
