MARTON FORM

Promising Young Horses

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Wings Of Song Looks Good (By The Watcher.) A few years ago maiden class generally was strong enough to necessitate a stable possessing an exceptionally smart horse if a win was to ‘be assured, but more recently the maidens have been well below the average. There was a change on Saturday at Marton, when Wings of Song made his opponents look very cheap, and it is a long time since such a promising novice has been seen. Last season when trained by F. McHugh at Marton he showed great pace in his only two races, but did not run on at the end. Purchased hy Mr. T. A. Duncan for .>OO guineas, ami trained by L. G. Morris, Wings of Song looks a bargain, for there can be. little doubt he has a future, lie is by Hunting S f *ng from Adornment, by The Nut from Elegance, by Seaton Delaval. His dam is a sister to Landslide and Refinement. A Solid Colt. Although Taitama did not win by any big margin in the Juvenile Handicap nt Marlon on Saturday it was the style in which ho scored that impressed. He stood up the leaders at least half a dozen lengths early', and quickly got into n position from which hy finished on resolutely- when called upon. Taitama is a strong, solid-looking colt, and is bred to be good, being by Ringmaster from Lady Bentinek, a sister to Lad.v Cavendish, and half-sister to Reretnoana. Went Well. Enrich, the brother to Globe trotter, ran a good race in the Juvenile at Marton. He began well and after holding his place in behind the leader, Uvedale, he finished on. He did not leave the rails and had an opening come on the inner it is possible he might have got up. Will Improve. Black Robe showed a lot of pace to run fifth in the same race after ‘being well back early, having drawn the extreme outer, 15, a ‘big handicap at the halfmile start, at Marton. Black Robe is by Leighon from Habit, an Absurd mare who won races for Mr. H. MeManaway.

Showed Promise. The Foxbridge filly. Sly Girl, ran a good race for a green youngster. She did not. look So forward as the others, and she is well above the average in size, especially for a filly. She is the first foal of her dam, Air Lassie, who is by Romeo from Air Queen by Flying King— Vanga, an imported marc by Cylgad.

Foals By Colossus. . Tripping, the dam of Dannevirke, has foaled a black colt to Colossus. Cupid s Mark has foaled a filly to Ihe same horse, thus she is a sister to the Melbourne Cup winner, Aranui. Nectar, an unraced mure by Black Ronald —Constantia, by Lucullus, has a chestnut colt to Colossus.

A Bargain If Ho Stands. At the dispersal sale of the late Mr. AV. Higgins’s horses the English gelding, Royal Star 11, went for only 25gns. as there was considerable doubt about his soundness. Since being put into work at Hastings ho has done all that has been asked of him. and after his good race into fourth place in the Marton Handicap, it is only a matter of him standing to prove a rare bargain.

Conveyer Sore. Conveyer could not fulfil his Marton engagement owing to injuring a leg. He may have to Ibe let up which is unfortunate as he was showing every sign of au early return to form.

From a Staying Family. Sleeveless, who is making her name as a smart three-year-old, is the last foal of her dam, Chivalry, who is by Gay Lad from Lady Talbot, by I’ilgrim’s Progress —Lady Lilian, by Phaeton —Lad.v Zetland. Lady Lilian produced Lady Victoria dam of the New Zealand Cup winner, Koyal Star, and Lady Minerva, dam of the Auckland Cup winner, Minerval. It is, therefore, not surprising Unit Sleeve, less, in addition to possessing pace, can also run on well.

Changes In Dates. Changes in racing (lutes have been approved as follows:- —tlt.autau. to November 4; Woodville February 24 and 26 from February 23 and 24; and Greymouth, March 28 in lieu of the meeting abandoned on September 9.

Bred In Hawke’s Bay. Fundy Bay, who nearly brought off a sensational surprise in the hurdle race at Geraldine on Saturday, is a five-year-old brother to Nereus.

Father And Sou. Horses trained at the new stables recently erected by P. T. Hogan at Washdyke are now being raced as trained by P. and AV. Hogan, the latter being a son of the veteran trainer, and the combination had its first success when (luspini easily accounted for the maiden field in the Wainui Hack Handicap at Orari on Saturday. L. J. Ellis. li. J. Bills was among Ihe spectators at Geraldine. If all goes well he hopes to be back in the saddle at the Dunedin spring meeting.

Foals At Grange Stud. The imported English mare Florilege ha,s foaled at the Grange Stud a bay filly to Lang Bian. Florilege was covered in England by Lang Bian, and the latter is now at the Karamu stud. Florilege is by the Derby winner Felstead from Floreue (by another Derby winner in Captain Cuttle). Florilege is on a visit to Phaleron Bay. Other arrivals- at the Grange Stud include a brown filly by Hinginaster from Merry Miss, an imported English marc by Son-iu-Law from Merrie Lassie; a. brown filly by Siegfried from Polonaise, ilnm of Wagner; a brown filly by Broiefort from Lady Dilworth ; a brown colt by Phaleron Bay from Hunting Lodge; a brown filly by Phaleron Bay from Good Conduct, and a filly by Phaleron Bay from Hnlloniet. Recovered.

The Ellerslie jockey L. Dulieu Ims made a good recovery from his recent operation, and will resume riding at the Ohinetnuri Jockey Club's meeting, wjien his mounts will include Llangollen, Kenneth Itobert and Charcot.

Southern Three-year-old. Great interest is being shown in the progress of the two Southland candidates in the Dunedin Guineas, Nigger Boy and Dark Flight, both of which are trained at. Riverton, in which district they are owned. So far Tauraiuai is the only Southland juvenile to have won the Dunedin classic, but that success should be improved on next: month. Nigger Boy Ims trained on the right way since he won al. his last two starts at Riccarton. He was given a brief respite on his return and has been putting plenty of dash into his. work in recent essays. He has won well over six furlongs and there appears no reason why he should not run out a mile. He will certainly lack nothing on the score of condition. Later On. Great Night, trained by A. J.' Martin for Mr. It. J. Murphy, of AVellington, is on the way Io winning some hack races in tlie South Island (reports the "Press"), lie is a long-striding galloper, lint in boll) races at Orari suffered by inability Io go with (lie fields early. He is a four-year-old geiding by Niglitmai-cli from Bonny Dawn, dam of Aeeeptalile and Hine Ra. both bred ami raced l»y Mr. Murphy.

A Solid Performance. Shanghai Lily has developed into n solid four-yeur-old and her two successes

at Orari were very impressive. In Saturday’s race she gave Capricious a substantial start entering upon the run home and then, being unalfle to get a run through near the fence, she was taken to the outside of Capricious. 'Phis meant a los.m of some ground, but. Shanghai Lil.Vi when called upon reeled off a sterling finishing effort and was going away from Capricious at the post. She is another of Lord Warden's progeny, her dam being the Clareueeux mare Malmsey, dam of Wino Card, who. by the way, was not started on Saturday owing to a suitable rider not being available.
