POSITION OF THE PORT BOWEN

Soundings On Seaward < Side Taken Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI, August 2. With the return to fine weather, opportunity was taken today to ascertain the depths of water on the seaward side of the stranded liner Fort Bowen, at Castlecliff. This work was undertaken by the Wanganui Harbour Board’s pilot launch. The harbourmaster, Captain F. G. Taylor, and the marine superintendent for the Port Line in Sydney, Captain D. W. Gibson, are supervising the taking of soundings. The lighter, Kaiwaka, in charge of Captain J. Connor, proceeded to lay the mushroom anchors and cables, which will be attached to the Port Bowen. The position of the anchors will be indicated 'by buoys. A contract has been let for lorries to transfer cargo from the Port Bowen to cool stores. The 'building of a platform from the Port Bowen to the shore to facilitate unloading is under consideration, and probably this course will be adopted as 'being the more expeditious method of transferring cargo to the lorries.
