PUKEKOHE, July 31,

Pukekohe onions are now moving into consumption freely and it is estimated that about 70 to 80 tons have been sold to the retail trade since last Monday. The price continues' firm at £l/0/6 a cwt. f.o.r. Pukekohe. About 220 tons are now left awaiting orders.

Difficulty is being experienced in supplying the demand for Pukekohe cauliflowers, and the high price ruling last week, 11/6 a chapman bag and 15/0 a sack, continues. Cabbages are still in good supply aud are going away to a heavy demand. Both Drumhead ami Savoy cabbages still sell at. D/4 a chapman bag and 13/6 a sack. A very good demand for parsnips has set in and the price has hardened from 6/- to D/4 a sugar bag since last Monday. Carrots still sell at 8/3 a sugar bag aud swede turnips up to 5/6. Pumpkins remain at 16/- a cwt., with stocks dwindling. In the past three, weeks frequent hailstorms have wiped out millions of the onion plants that were being raised in the Pukekohe district. Rows in sheltered i places have escaped, but in exposed posiI lions beds have been practically demolishi ed. One firm which sowed about 1201 b. 1 of seed in various parts of the district ‘ consider (hey will be fortuimte to obtain half the number of plants they expected ; when the seed was put in.
