Hospital Draw With Petone SWIFTS BEAT MARIST Wins For Waterside And Seatoun Matches in the Wellington Football Association’s first 2k division competition were advanced a further stage on Saturday, when Petone, leaders in the championship, dropped a valuable point to the solid Hospital team after a game of few bright moments. As the result of their win against Diamond, Waterside are now level with Petone, but they have played one more game. Seatoun proved too strong for Technical Old Boys in their match at Seatoun Park, and Marist, coming with a late run, almost made a draw of their game against Swifts. Results were:— Petone 0, Hospital 0. Waterside 4, Diamond 0. Swifts 4, Marist 3. Seatoun 5, Technical Old Boys 2. Championship Tables First A Division.

No Goals Scored Hospital showed that their defeat of Waterside was no fluke by holding Petone, the championship leaders, to a scoreless draw. The game was more remarkable for the solidness of the defence of both teams than for sparkling forward play, and, with Hospital pursuing their usual spoiling tactics, Petone were given no time to settle down. _ Scoring chances were missed on both sides, but with the goalkeepers at each end very much on the alert, several promising shots were saved. IVatts, the Petone centre-half, was distributing the ball evenly to his _ forwards and Leslie made several promising openings for the rest of the line; but when the tried to score himself, the tall form of Todd, the Hospital centre-half was always barring his way. Jeffery ana Miles, the Hospital backs, were kept busy, and Lambert at left half, played a sterling game on defence, particularly in the second spell. The absence of Woods appeared to affect the Petone forward line, and, though Craig and Haley sent in some promising centres, the ball always seemed to be headed clear by a Hospital defender. Lawler and Tweedie were prominent for Hospital in the opening exchanges, but found Haines very safe at left fullback. Mehl had one or two chances, but was bustled off the ball and the best Hospital could do was to force a couple of corners. At the other end, Patterson had a shot which Wyatt cleared, and later Reid sent in a hard drive which the goalkeeper saved with difficulty. Toward the close of the first hair Hospital set up a determined attack, but without result. Petone were quickly into their stride in the second spell, and Leslie broke through only to have Jeffrey snap up the ball from his toe and clear when a score seemed certain. The Hospital defence had a torrid time for about ten minutes, but then Rogers cleared and Jeromson and Harris carried play to the other end. It was not till the last 15 minutes, however, that play became at all exciting, with both sets of forwards striving hard to score. The Hospital halves were tiring but they stuck to their task and the game ended without score. Waterside Extended Waterside were thoroughly extended to beat Diamond by 4 goals to 2 on the Ao. 2 ground at the Basin Reserve. Waterside had to fight all the way to prevail against Diamond, who were in inspired form, and it was only in the closing stages that Waterside gained the ascendancy with two rather lucky goals. Diamond, who appeared to have a good grip on the game, had the misfortune to lose the services of Page, inside right, early m the second half, and they finished the game with only 10 men. The game had not been long in progress when Tucker went through for Diamond to score with a low ground shot. Waterside swarmed round the Diamond goal, but brilliant defensive play kept them from scoring. Waterside were awarded a penalty and Longbottom put them level with the spot kick. Play swung rapidly from goal to goal and, though the Waterside attacks looked the more dangerous, they failed to get past the Diamond full-backs, Davidson and Bold. The Diamond forwards, led by Tucker and Du Feu, were by no means out of it, but they found the Waterside defence too solid and the spell ended with the scores level. ' The second half had hardly begun when Page, inside right for Diamond, was injured and carried off, just when Diamond aeemed likely to score. Waterside after several attempts to score were successful when > McCarthy sent in a low drive. Waterside were having the better of the midfield exchanges, but were unimpressive in front of goal. Then Nicol, the Diamond left half, found an opening in the Waterside defence and scored. Waterside had a goal disallowed for offside, but went into the lead when Walker beat McLaughlin in a race for the ball and eent it over the goalkeeper’s head into the net. Later in the game Janes, when apparently well behind the goal-line, sent over a cross for McCarthy to score, making the final score 4-2 in favour of Waterside. Swifts Beat Marist Swifts had only one goal to spare in their match against Marist at Kelburn Park, winning by the odd goal in seven. The first half was keenly contested, and though Swifts led 2-1 at half-time, Marist had had much the better of the game. The first portion of the second half was all in Swifts’ favour, but Marist came Io light, in the last 15 minutes and nearly drew level. . With the light breeze behind them, Marist were first to attack, M. Quirke racing up the wing and crossing to R. Quirke, who forced a corner from Tonks. The Marist forwards kept up the pressure and only good work on the part of Chapman, Salisbury and Olliver kept them from scoring. A lightning raid by the Swifts’ forwards failed narrowly, but in the nick of time, Tarkington cleared Heath’s shot. The Quirke brothers. Swain and Thompson worked their way through the Swifts' defence, and M. Quirke was unlucky not to score. Swifts then asserted themselves and Baker passed across the centre for the fleet-footed Hickmott to open the scoring. Swifts’ went further ahead when Chapman sent n long pass upfield to Hickmott, and Shankie received in a handy position and scored. Shortly before half-time, R»

Quirke dropped the ball ahead of Thompson, who scored for Marist. ' _ Swifts were soon attacking m tue second spell and Baker outpaced the opposition to score Swifts’ third goal, lhe Marist defence stood up to a terrific battering, and a miskick by one of the backs was seized on by Hickmott to crash the ball past Turkington to make the score 4- in Swifts’ favour. Faced with this deficit, Marist improved their play, and, from a corner, Swain scored. Shortly afterward, Leonard scored a smart goal, and the game ended with Swifts winning by four goals to three. Three-Goal Margin Playing at Seatoun Park, Seatoun always had the edge on Technical College Old Boys, and won by 5 goals to 2, attei leading by 2 goals to 1 at halt-time. Though their team was rearranged as tut result of the absence of C.’Yeoman amt 11. Salt, Seatoun went very well, and their forwards gave the Technical defence a busy time. The Technical half-line, with A, Gates at centre, worked hard, ana early in t)he second spell Technical levelled the scores at 2-all. Seatoun scored thiee more goals after that, but Technical were far from out of it, and McKenzie was called-on to save two or three times. A run by Wrigley early in the first nail had Seatoun defending strenuously, but Boyes cleared and sent his forwards away. Webster making an opening tor D. Johnston to score. Torrington, Liddicoat and McNaughton were prominent m the Xecunical forward line, but the Seatoun defence was sound. At the other end, .Turner saved a shot from Mebster, but later D. Johnston scored after the ball had hit the cross-bar. Technical improved their .play, and Liddicoat scored to make the score 2-1 in -Seatoun’s favour at half-time. Catching Seatoun before they had time to settle down again in the second halt, Technical drew level when. Liddicoat slipped through an opening m the Seatoun defence and placed the ball past McKenzie. A corner by Gendall saw Webster head a neat goal for Seatoun, ana though Technical attacked strongly for a time, Seatoun carried play to the other end, and, from a penalty, Edmunds put them further ahead. With both sets or backs working well, there was no further score till near the end of the game, when D. Johnston goaled to make the final score 5- in favour of Seatoun.
