AMATEUR BOXING

Hutt Valley Championships Tonight Some first-class entertainment should be provided in the Labour Hall, Petone, tonight, when the Hutt Valley amateur boxing championships will be decided. There are some capable boxing instructors in the Hutt Valley gymnasiums, and the lads of the district have taken up the sport enthusiastically. That they have been trained along sound lines has been demonstrated at the tournaments which have been staged this season by the Hutt A’alley Boxing Association, which gives every encouragement to amateurs. Both the senior and junior championships will be decided tonight, and a special six-round contest will be staged between Leo Parsons, Palmerston North, who is champion featherweight of his province, and G. Todd, of the Newtown Club, Wellington. Benefit to Ted Morgan. The Wellington Boxing Association will stage a benefit tournament in the Town Hall on Wednesday of next week for Teel .Morgan, the well-known professional boxer, who had the ill fortune some months ago to break a leg through falling off a building while at. work. All the local gymnasiums have rallied to thecause, and the best amateur talent, will be seen in action. It is pretty certain that a professional contest will also be staged, the boxers giving their services free. Jackie Sharpe has offered his services, but there may be difficulty in' finding an opponent heavy enough for him. However, as Finnegan, Hanson, and Leonard are all willing to give their services free there should be no difficulty in arranging a professional match. Everyone is only too willing to help Ted Morgan as he is the only New Zealander who has ever won a world boxing title, having carried off the welterweight championship at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928. He also boxed for some years as a professional in Nev. Zealand.
