GLARE VISIBLE FROM WELLINGTON

Fire On Eastern Hutt Hills A fiercely-red glare in the sky over the Hutt Valley attracted the attention of many residents of Wellington on Saturday night. The glare was the reflection of a gorse lire on the eastern hills which, though confined to a fairly small area, was fanned by a strong southerly breeze and burnt fiercely for two or three hours. Tiie fire was well down on the hills behind “Woodlands,” the property of Mr. W. Goring Johnston, Nai Nai. During the afternoon a number of fires were lit to burn off gorse along the hills, but they were almost out at sunset. When the wind rose at about 9 p.m. the flames sprang up again, and. in addition to burning the gorse, did some damage to pine trees. At one stage it appeared that a bouse back from Seddon Street was iu danger, but the fire died out before getting to it.
