SOCIAL AND DANCE FOR QUEEN CANDIDATES
An atmosphere of warm friendliness characterized the unofficial social and dance held in the clubrooms of the Lower Hutt branch of the Hutt Valley Returned Soldiers’ Association on Saturday night in honour of the six candidates who participated in the recent centennial ’ queen carnival in the Hutt Valley and eastern bays. A popular queen candidate, Mrs. Richard Bradley, who represented the women’s organizations, was unfortunately not present, as she and Mr. Bradley have taken up their residence in Hamilton. Representatives of the various committees were present.
“Queen” Natalie Whiteman, representing the motor industries, was present, also "princesses” Mavis Taylor (manufacturers’ representative), Ella Darby (business and professions), Muriel Howe (sports), Muriel Briggs (railways), \and Joan Cowie (R.S.A.). Mr. D. Wickham, chairman of the social committee, expressed deep appreciation of the work of the various organizations and their queens, and presented the queen and her princesses with certificates of honour.
The following member's of the various committees on whom “honours” had been conferred at the coronation also received certificates: Mrs. J. W. Andrews, chairman of the Hutt Valley committee, Mrs. C. G. Shand, Mrs. Brennan, Miss A. G. Wilson, and Messrs. D. H. Wickham, H. Mockeridge, L. E. Tapp, A. Matthews, L. Holmes, J. Kerr, King! London, C. Winton, C. Forbes, S. Wagstaff, and Peters. A very hearty “cheerio” was given for Mrs. Bradley. Dancing, for which Mrs. C. G. Shand was master of ceremonies, was interspersed with the following programme: Vocal items, Misses Jean and Judy Lang; Irish jig in character, Miss Entwhistle; tap-dance, Mr. J. Blake; instrumental Items, Mr. W. Henry; ventriloquist item, Mr. J. Watkins; Mr. 11. Rilstone, lightning sketches. The committee comprised Mr. D. 11. Wickham (chairman) ; Mr. H. Mockeridge (secretary), Mrs. C. G. Shand (treasurer) and organizer of the competitions; Messrs. L. E. Tapp, A. Matthews, L. Holmes, and J. Kerr. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. IV. Lang, Mr. and Mrs. J. Lang, Mr. and Mrs. M. Popplewell, Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Briggs, Mrs. A. H. Monteith, Mr. and Mrs. T. Hudson, Mr. and Mts. A. E. Pattlnson, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Whiteman, Mr. and Mrs. P. McNlcol, Mrs. M. Cunliffe, Mr. and Mrs. L. Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Cowie, Mr. and Mrs. E. Double, Mr. and Mrs. R. Gillen, Mr. and Mrs. J. Glenny, Mr. and Mrs. J. According to a broadcast Italian annuncernent from Tripoli, any inhabitant of Libya found guilty of listening .to the Tunis wireless station will be liable to a fine of 500 lire or, if the offence io repeated to a month's imprisonment. Listening to certain other stations, such as Moscow, is punishable by a month’s imprisonment for the first offence.
