HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES
Alteration In System Of Collection Suggested
Dominion Special Service
WANGANUI, July 11
The Waltotara County Council at its monthly meeting today agreed .with the suggestion of the 1 Marton Borough Gounoil for an alteration in the system of collecting heavy traffic licence fees from farmers. The Marton Borough Council wrote objecting to the decision arrived at by the recent conference held in Wanganui to allocate heavy traffic licence fees and suggested that no payments be made till the matter was further considered by the local bodies concerned. The Marton council considered that the Batea County Council had no moral right to refuse to collect heavy traffic fees from farmers operating within its district and at the same time to collect'its full share from the pool, particularly as the four other county councils in the district had carried out their obligations. Marton favoured some substantial concession to farmers who conduct heavy traffic and agreed to a 25 or even 33 1-3 per cent, allowance. , r It was also suggested that the Minister of Transport be asked to amend the law and regulations and give effect to the proposed reductions during the _ present session of Parliament, and that it should be made mandatory on all local bodies to collect fees on the reduced scale.
