NO AUTHORITY FOR COLLECTIONS
Raising Money For Trees
For Cemeteries
The cemeteries committee had been asked whether the council had authorized the collection of money for planting the Bolton Street and Sydney Street cemeteries with trees and shrubs as numbers of citizens bad been asked to contribute, said the chairman of the committee, Cr. C. 11. Chapman, at a meeting of the Wellington City Council last night. • The cemeteries were vested In tne city council arnd no authority had been given for the collections, he said. The policy of the cemeteries committee had been gradually to dean up portions of the cemeteries which had an unsatisfactory appearance and to introduce as much grass lawn as possible. The amount of money allowed annually by the council had been so small that the undoubted improvement which had taken place in recent years was quite creditable. The assistance given by the Beautifying Society and the Early Settlers’ Association and other workers was gratefully acknowledged. It was hoped to speed up the work in the near future, and suggestions would come before the committee and the council dealing with tiie proposals for the whole area.
