VESSEL WARPED OFF ROCKS

Smart Seamanship Of Master By Telegraph—Press Association. WHAKATANE. June 30. Smart seamanship was shown by Captain E. Cathcart, master of , the Northern Company's Ton, when he warped the vessel off rocks where she was stranded at 6 o’clock this morning after being caught by a wave when leaving Whakatane for Auckland. A fair sea was running and the lon, with a pilot launch, was in difficulties when a wave caught them as they swung in the narrow rocky channel to head seawards. The lightly-laden Toa became unmanageable, struck a rock and grounded among a nest of reel's. Lilies were laid out to the rocks and the Toa'backed off after nine hours. The main damage was a broken propeller, a bent tailshaft, and broken sheathing. She is making no water. The Toa will probably sad lor Auckland on one engine, under escort of the Otimai, when that vessel leaves.
