WEATHER SITUATION

Complex , Depression Advancing

Following is the weather report and the forecast for wind and seas issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, for the 24 hours ending 3 p.m. today : — General situation: The depression in the north is filling up, but a complex depression is advancing across the south' Tasman Sea, and is already affecting the extreme south-west 'of the .South Island. Forecast:—

Winds: Variable at first with light to moderate north-easterly ' predominating. North-westerly, however, in the far south and north-westerlies gradually extending northward. Force moderate generally, but becoming strong in exposed positions. Seas (New Zealand waters) : Slight to moderate, but rising on the west coast.

Eastern Tasman Sea: Light to moderate northerly to north-westerly winds, later freshening and becoming more westerly. Seas moderate, to rather rough.

YESTERDAY’S WEATHER

Wellington: A fixed smoke haze hung over the city in the morning, but was less dense in the afternoon. Above the haze level conditions were fine and bright, and there was little wind. The minimum temperature on Thursday night was 46.8 deg., and the maximum yesterday 60.3. At 3 p.m. the temperature was 57.5 deg., and the barometer reading 1005 millibars, or 29.7501 U. Palmerston North: Fine, sunny and warm, wit.li a north-east wind. Masterton: A fine, sunny day, after light showers overnight. Light westerly wind.

Wanganui: Fine and sunny, but cold at night. Sea smooth. The barometer reading at 4.30 p.m. was IQOS millibars.

New Plymouth: Sunny and calm. Barometer at. 5 p.m., 1002.3 millibars. Napier and Hastings: Fine, with passing low cloud and a moderate north-easterly breeze. Mild' temperatures.

Waipukurau: Occasional bright sunshine, interspersed with light showers. Maximum temperature, 55 degrees. The barometer showed little change, the reading at 7 p.m. being 1009 millibars.

Auckland: The sky was overcast, and there was a light,wind from the east. Misty 1 conditions were experienced generally, with showers at times. Maximum temperature, 59 degrees. Barometric pressure was fairly steady, the reading at 5 p.m. being 1004 millibars.

Christchurch; Overcast and line, with a fresh north-easterly wind. Maximum temperature, 54.2 degrees. The barometer fell slowly to 1004 millibars at. 5 p.m. Dunedin: Fine mild weather was again experienced, with bright, sunshine throughout the day. There was little wind, but the temperature did not rise above 58 degrees. The barometer was fairly steady, with a rising tendency.
