WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Representative Teams To Be Selected Today

LAST WEEK’S PLAY ' REVIEWED

By

Defence.

Saturday was not a good day for basketball in Wellington'? A strong anu bitter northerly wind made shooting very difficult, which was noticeable in the lowscoring in the tournament games. The final between Miramar, winners of the first life, and Island Bay, winners.of the second life, will be played today. iolaiid Bay went into the third round aud were then beateh by Kirkcaldie's Office by the only goal scored—and that after time was called. They met Kirkcaidie’s agttin in the second life, and this time won. Again only one goal was scored. That left St. Anne's and Island Buy to play the final almost in the dark, and Island Bay won easily. St. Anne's only loirs previously had 'been to Miramar.

Competition Games. Another surprise was* sprung in the senior B grade, when Wembley, who had failed to secure a win against Wesley the previous week, last week beat Wellington College Old Girls. In the first round this game was a draw, but on Saturday Wembley scored in spite of the wind, but Wellington College could not. That upset the championship table, which now rends: Island Bay 13, Wembley 10, Wellington College 9.

Senior A Grade. There were no matches in the senior A grade last week, and today the deferred tournament under international rulings will be held. As the teams in the New Zealand tournament first grade in Easter, 1940, will play to international rulings this will be an opportunity to try out the game. New Zealand Representatives.

Word has been received from the New Zealand executive that the team to play Australia in Wellington at Easter, 1940, will be chosen at the New Zealand tournament in August this year. As last'year, when New Zealand visited Australia, a number of reserves will also be chosen.

Wellington's Representatives. Today the Wellington teams are to be announced. The senior B and third grades will announce only ten players,- and others will be added later if necessary. Eighteen names, or more if.any are available for 1939 and not for 1940, will be announced for the senior A team, the final selection of 12 to go to Invercargill will be made on July 15. M, Higgins (University) is not available at all, but she is the only one who could not go to Invercargill this year. As the association has now rented part of the Wellington show buildings, all representative practices will be held there.

Protests. A protest was received recently from a \ club about the refereeing of a game. The executive was not able to consider it because the protest fee of 10/6. did not accompany the letter. Probably the club did not know it had to send in this fee, which is returned if the protest is not considered frivolous. Club Championship.

Some* of the clubs'that were doing well earlier in .the season have not won so many games lately and so the position in the club championship has changed a good deni. Taupo are now well in the lend and unless disaster overtakes them chn hardly fail, to win.

Referees’ Examinations. Theoretical examinations for referees are being held all over the Dominion this week. Answers to the questions will be published in this column.
