SOUTHLAND NOTES

Mr. W. E. Hazlett’s Team z For North Tour

BURWOOD HAS DONE WELL

Dominion Special Service

INVERCARGILL, June 30.

Mr. W. E. Hazlett intends taking a team of jumpers north next month, the campaign to open at. the South Canterbury meeting on July 22 and lead up to the Christchurch Hunt and Grand National meetings at Riccarton. The team will probably include El Caballo. Burwood, Astral Flash, Liberate and possibly Colonel French. Though Burwood has not raced this season be has made good progress in recent weeks, but' it is not intended to go on with him if his doubtful leg gives any indication of trouble. His schooling displays at headquarters have been of a brilliant nature •and if raced at coming meetings he looks certain to better his already fine record over country.

If Burwood trains on and is taken north it is likely that Colonel French will not be taken. The three-year-old has developed into a fine type of jumper, and he gave a polished display of jumping over six hurdles yesterday morning. The racing he has had this season appears to have benefited him. Liberate is a young jumper of great promise and the Polazcl gelding acquitted himself well in a schooling bout with Gu.ste over four of the steeplechase fences yesterday morning. He has done a good amount of schooling and is well fitted to make his first appearance as a jumper. Guste, a newcomer to the jumping ranks, jumped carefully in his school yesterday, but it was an encouraging performance as it was only his second attempt over the course. For the remainder of the season he is likely to follow the Birchwood hounds. Since her Dunedin win Astral Flash has trained on the right way and as she has already s.hown her ability on winter tracks she will be a decided prospect at coming meetings, specially over middle distances. The report' that she was to be retired to the stud is incorrect.

The rising two-year-old Noko has been kept going, but his tasks have been very light. The Sir Simper colt has developed into an upstanding youngster and is just the one to show up in early two-year-old events for which he has been entered. He will be the first of Sir Simper’s'stock to race. El Caballo has done a good amount of work since racing at Dunedin and when next produced will lack nothing on the score of condition.

A late decision was made not to take Black Banner to Trentham. There is nothing, amiss witji him and as, far as can be gathered he will not be produced till the-Grand National meeting. I’. J. Boyle intends taking a team of jumpers north, and the campaign will probably open at Waimate Hunt meeting. Ashaway’s Teoent /schooling efforts have been rather disappointing and one morning last week he refused altogether to jump. In his earlier jumping tasks he showed some aptitude for the game, but has apparently turned sour. One of the most attractive yearlings in work at Invercargill is Wild Coon,'a colt by Nigger Minstrel from Miss Redowa, a half-sister to Baldowa, Red Boa, Redolent and others. He is a particularly well-developed colt, wonderfully mannered, and has a good style of galloping. He "has been entered in the two and three-year-old classics and will race in the same colours as Minford.
