DUNEDIN, June 30.

It came as a painful shock to his many friends to learn that, just when he appeared in a good state of health, the onetime successful rider. J. Beale, passed away in his sleep on Thursday night, lie was recognized as one of the most capable riders of his day, and his bright and cheery nature made him a popular figure in the sporting world. He won the Dunedin Cup on Bulawayo and the Great Autumn Handicap on the same horse. Other notable wins he had were on Dencalion, in the D.J.C. Handicap, the Birthday Handicap on Oiyoi and Standen, the Invercargill Cup on Warsaw and Sunny Loch, and many wins in minor events.

His son, Rex Bettie, is recognized as one of the leading horsemen over hurdles and fences, and to his widow and family the deepest sympathy will bo extended at their sudden and unexpected bereavement.
