FORM HORSES FOR TRENTHAM

Visitors With Good Prospects NOTES AND COMMENTS Survoy Coining Into Favour

(By

The Watcher.)

Tticearton track-watchers are keen on the chances of Trench Fight in the Whyte Handicap as the result of his recent work. He also worked well prior to his failures on his last visit, but this time the track conditions appear to be more in his favour. His stablemate Counterblast is also galloping brilliantly and may add to her already good record at Wellington meetings.

A Real Good One. Majority won six of his last seven .races and finished up by carrying welterweights with apparent ease. His last race was at New Year and he may need seasoning, but he has been putting a lot of vigour into his recent work at New Plymouth and is the ideal horse for a winter track. Cottingham is Class.

Cottingham should take some beating in the first event on Tuesday, as he has been schooling well over Riccarton country and he and Silver Sight, have easily the best credentials in the field as hurdlers and flat racers. This race is often won by a recruit to the steepleehasing game.

Likes Trentham. Prince Acre, who will run in the Stewards’ Handicap on Tuesday, won this once in 1935 and ran second to Matoru last year.

May Do Well Here. Recollection has won five of his last seven races, his most recent success being at Ashburton last Saturday. Recollection claims only two engagements at the meeting, in the Trentham Hurdles on the first day and the Highweight Handicap on the second day. Maybe the Favourite.

As the day approaches there appears every likelihood of Survoy seriously challenging Power Chief for favouritism in the Wellington Steeplechase. Riders at Trentham.

Additional riding engagements announced for the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting are as follows: N. R. McKenzie, Hutana; J. Winder, Maori Song, Susan; P. Atkins, Halley, Kathbella, Saki; F. E. Baker, Survalyon; J. F. Fergus, Royal Dance; G. Cameron, Whirling, Royal Bachelor; O. Melnally, Melvanui ,Awhiowhio; H. Long. Du Mnurier; H. J. Callahan, Black Majesty, War Cloud, Meamca, Le Toquet, Cuisinier; M. Caddy, Skyrena. From Riccarton.

Court Yard, Haughty Winner. Phenomenal and Ponty arrived from Riccarton yesterday, but the majority of the Riccarton horses are due today.

In Two Races. There are some local engagements for •Tuesday, though at least, one of them. Silver Sight, who is in’the hack steeples and Trentham Hurdles, has been announced as starting in the hurdle race. Chile is in both steeplechases, but as his stablemate Slayer accepted only in the Wellington Steeplechase, Chile looks likely to take on the hack event. Fireguard is in both the hack and Trentham Hurdles.

Spring Form Was Good. Sly Fox, who is a Whyte Handicap candidate, was very successful on his last visit to Trentham in the spring, but

after failing at the New Zealand Cup meeting, he had a spell and his only race since was an unplaced effort at Poverty Bay last month. Won Last Year.

Matoru, in the Stewards’ Handicap with 8.2, has 21b. more than he carried when he won 12 months ago, but his form this year is not so good, as he won immediately prior- to last year’s win. However, he has been shaping attractively on the tracks.

Stayers. All Irish and Riotous, the two topweights in the Wellington Steeplechase, are, on their records, doubtful beyond three miles, but the other horses in the field will not be found lacking in stamina.

King Rey. Horses with good flat records are always to be kept well on side when, put to hurdling, as they have only got to jump proficiently to have a pull on the average opnonent. King Rey is one Such engaged’at Wellington next week, and many good judges were greatly impressed by his first hurdling race at Wnipa last /week, when, although beaten into third place, he carried 11.10 and gave a stone and a beating to Inness Lad, who, was runner-up to Charade in the Great Northern Hurdles.

In Favour. . Fireguard is greatly fancied in the south for his Wellington engagements, particularly over the long journey in the Winter Hurdles. Fireguard was second in the last Grand National to Padishah.

A Good Performance. Jewelled Girdle, who ie engaged on Tuesday in the ha.ck hurdle race, put up a good performance on the flat here two years ago. On the third day he ran second to Pukeko in the Winter Oats and then came out and won the Kia Ora Handicap.

First Since December. Manawatu, who will try to stage a comeback in the Trentham. Hurdles, has not had a race since Woodville in December.

Betting By Telegraph. A Press Association message from Sydney states that seven metropolitan racing clubs, at a conference, decided to close the telegraph offices on their racecourses from today. The Australian Jockey Club, d-hich was not represented at the conference, will probably consider the matter at its committee meeting on July 7.

Auckland Horses’ Work. Chief interest at Ellerslie on Thursday was centred in the work of Valmint, Tutor nnd All Irish, candidates for the. Trentham meeting next week. Valmint demonstrated his fitness by going impressively over six furlongs, while Tutor and All Irish both worked well for jumpers. The No. 3 grass was used for galloping, and the going was heavy. Valmint (Wiggins) and Tutor (Markwick) were associated over six furlongs in 1.19 3-5, the last half-mile in 52 2-5.• They were brought home the last three furlongs by Spinning Wheel (Messervy) in 39. Valmint was not bustled, in the early stages, but when given a kick near the end he came away to finish just in front of Spinning Wheel, with Tutor several lengths away. The time was .good considering the ground, and Valmint’s effort gained him friends. Tutor pulled up showing no signs of the soreness that affected him after Te Awam.utu. It has now been decided to send him to Trentham, where he will be ridden by M. Ritchie. All Irish (McGrath) traversed a round in 1.46, the last six furlongs in 1.24. and half-mile in 56 1-5. He did his work in effortless style, and did not appear to be troubled by the going. All Irish is in great order, and will be given his final schooling at Trentham. At Takanini the only gallop of note was a sprint on the middle grass by Jack Tar (Fearn), and Bachelor King ('Stanton). The former ran six furlongs in 1.18, Bachelor King accompanying him for the first five, in 1.4 3-5, and then being eased.

Riders at Dannevirke. Riding engagements for Dannevirke have been announced as under: —W. J. Broughton, Kaiwaka, Mataroa; I. Roll-

loff. Ebb and Flow, Master Turbine; G. R. 'Tattersail, Guiding Light, Lindrum; D McGregor, Seyfried; E. Temperton. Inehkeith; C. L. Kerr, Prosy Boy, Harbour Bay; J. Campbell, Coliu; V. J. Mudford, iMarsya-s; R. Marsh, Hunting Moments; H. J. Callahan, Reipar; B. H. .Morris, The Ring, Quilp; W. Jenkins, Cherry Picker; Mr. G. G. Beatson, Inheritance ; B. Coeford, Royal Tinge; S. Wilson, Colossal Chief; J. Nicholson, Ayreslcigh, Hilaria; P. Atkins, Eola.

Trentham Timetable. Because of the divisions on the first day of the Wellington meeting, the timetable has'undergone a slight adjustment, and now is:—Mariri Steeplechase, 11.27; Woburn Hack, 12.6; Vittoria Hurdles, 12.48; Stewards’ (Handicap, 1.28; Wellington Steeplechase, 2.7; Trentham Hurdles, 2.50; Whyte Handicap, 3.30; Te Aro Hack, 4.15.
