WAR RELIEF

Many Men Entering

Hospital

Concern at the number of men being admitted to hospital was expressed by the chairman of the War Relief Association of Wellington, Mr. L. O. H. Tripp, in a report to the monthly meeting of the association yesterday. Many applications were being received from men who because of ill-health were unable to engage in manual labour and were forced to apply for assistance to supplement/ the income received by way of war veteran’s allowance or social security benefits he said. During the month the sum of £lO6 19/8 had been expended in sustenance. The number of persons who culled at the office of the association during the last month was 115.

The sum of £54/10/7 was expended in the purchase of household goods, clothing and footwear during the month. Applications in that direction had not been so numerous this winter- as in those of the last four years, because a greater number of fit men had been successful in- obtaining employment, and therefore comparatively few applications were being received from men in that category.

The question of the supply of winter underclothing to the exservicemen in Paraparaumu camp, was, at the request of the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association, considered, and it was decided to seek the co-operation of kindred societies in making an issue of one set of underclothing, one flannel shirt, and two pairs of socks to each of the 16 men in the rump.
