FALSE CLAIM FOR INSURANCE
Young Man Admits Charge Charged in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, with making a false statement to the police, also with attempting to obtain £4O from the General Accident Fire and Life Assurance Corporation, Limited, by ,u false pretence, Leslie Bramwell Clifford, motordriver, aged 24, was convicted and discharged by .Mr. J. 11. Luxford, S.M., after the police had explained the circumstances of the case. Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle, who prosecuted, said accused was on probation for attempted false pretences and the present charges related to offences committed before he was dealt with by the Supreme Court. The proceedings were in the nature of clear-ing-up charges and accused was giving satisfaction while on probation. Evidence showed that during December of last year accused packed his motor-cycle in a case which he had stored in Wellington. On January 15 he reported to the police that the motor-cycle had been stolen. Later he claimed £4O from the insurance company. The ease containing the motorcycle was subsequently retrieved by accused and the machine was abandoned in a Wellington street after the numbers had been filed off the engine and chassis. When interviewed by the police accused admitted the charges and said he realized he had been very foolish.
