VICTORIA HOUSE

Still The Centre Of Much

Public Interest

The shell of Victoria House, in Victoria Street, where the big Wellington lire started on Tuesday night, was again the centre of considerable public interest yesterday. Throughout the day groups of onlookers on the opposite footpath inspected tin? ruins. Salvage operations were carried on from the remains of premises formerly occupied by indentors on Hie first and second floors. Working in what appeared to be a very precarious position. a man on the second lloor threw to the street below quantities of soiled and sodden sheeting material, which was loaded on lo a lorry. From the ruins on Hie first door another tenant recovered some of his books and records.

A barricade extending to the Centre of Hie roadway kept passers-by from approaching the building closely.
