Sir Stanley Goodall, Director of Naval Construction at the Admiralty, addressing the Institute of Naval Architects today, described H.M.S. Ark Royal as the first aircraft carrier to be wholly designed as such. He said she had a Hying deck 800 feet in length, which had proved in practice to be very satisfactory. Her armaments consisted of sixteen -IJ-inch dual-purpose guns, both high and low angle, and four-pom-poms. Iler speed in trials was 31} knots. Special attention had been given to rapid manoeuvring.
