NEW AWARD
Power Board Staffs Almost complete agreement having been reached by the parties in the conciliation proceedings, an award covering electric power board employees iu the Northern, Wellington and Marlborough districts was issued yesterday by the Court of Arbitration. The only matters referred to the Court were the term and scope of the award and the question of including inspectors. In a memorandum, Mr. Justice O’Regan said that the electrical workers’ unions objected to the inclusion of inspectors in the award ou the grounds (1) that they were already provided for iu electrical workers’ awards nnd agreements, and (2) that the rules of the respondent unions did not cover such workers. The Court was of the opinion that the rules of the electrical workers’ unions made provision for inspectors, and that they were? therefore properly bound by tiie various electrical workers awards and industrial agreements. The Court had accordingly £etused to include them in the award. In accordance with agreement the wages are retrospective to October 31, 1938. The award will expire on January 31, 1940.
