5000 ATTEND PETONE SPORTS
Fitness Week Meeting Une of the largest gatherings in the history of athletics in the Hutt Valley was held at tße Petone Recreation Ground last night, when 5000 people attended the meeting conducted under the auspices ot the Petone Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, in connexion with Fitness Week. The meeting was preceded by a procession, in which 500 took part, including 300 girl ami boy pupils from the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, who made’ an impressive sight in their neat school uniforms. The parade was headed by the Hutt Valley Pipe Band, and included a harmonica band, Petone Wrestling Club, and Y M.C.A. members and representatives of other sports. At the ground the wrestling club members gave exhibition bouts, and the Y.M.C.A. members a display of gymnasties ; A sporiw event in which there was great interest was the industrial relay. This was won by the General Motors team which was picked by the ex-New Zealand Army Rugby player, Lieutenant E. King. The large attendance showed the possibilities of a revival of public interest. in athletics, and the prospect of the development of athletic contests be-
