SALVAGE MISHAP
Flames Issue From Funnel Of Submerged Ship (Received January 25, 11.30 p.m.) (MELBOURNE, January 25. Hopes of raising the Union Company’s freighter Kakariki, which sank in the Port Phillip fairway two years ago after a collision, were postponed by a curious mishap today. The Kakariki, whose funnel and masts only are showing above tho water, was ready for raising on Friday after six months of work underwater patching and Pumping.
When petrol was being poured today info the pumping engine inside the ship, it caught lire and for an hour the funnel top spouted Hames and smoke. There will be, further delay now while the engine is removed from the funnel for repairs.
