HAWKSWORTH WINS MEN’S SINGLES

R. Ferkins Well Beaten

NORTH ISLAND TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Finals Of Championships

Dominion Special Service.

MASTERTON. January 21

Brilliant tenuis was witnessed in the North Island championships, which were practically concluded on the Masterton club's courts today. The gained are being played in conjunction with the Wairarapa association's championships and handicap events. Beautiful sunshine again favoured the tournament, and the gallery was one of the largest seen in Masterton for a considerable time. To win the men's singles Lille, I’. Hawksworth (Masterton) played magnificently, completely outplaying It. McL. Fcrkins, who was made to look like a novice. Throughout the tournament Hawksworth played tennis the like of which he has not shown before, and by virtue of his speed and terrific forehand drives he was never headed at any stage in the three sets, which he won 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. Xu the semifinal his win over G. A. Pearce was even more clear-cut, the score being 6-1. 6-0. Neither opponent looked like winning at any time. The Ferkins brothers were in excellent form in the men's doubles, scoring a good win over K. XV. Dyer and S. Painter. 6-3. 6-2. As a spectacle, however, the semifinal was better than the final, and the gallery was kept in tense excitement. A great duel was fought between Miss M. Glenny and Mrs. G. Cotterill. the. former winning the women's singles championship, 8-6, 7-5. F XX' Morrell was another who played splendidly throughout, the tournament, and he won the men's handicap singles against C. K. Long, 9-2. Partnered by C. Carle, he also won the handicap doubles, in which the pair beat Barton and Smith, 9-6. The final of the women's handicap singles was won by Miss J. I'orrester, who beat Mrs. P. Hawksworth 7-1. Both were on the scratch mark. Results: —
