Tallow, Hemp And Fruit
The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram irom the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated January 20:— Tallow—Market very quiet. Present spot quotations arc : —Mutton : 24/6 to 25/-; good, 21/- to 21/6; fair, 16/6 to 17/-. Beef: Fine, 21/- to 21/6; good, 18/-; fair, 16/- to 16/6. Mixed: Good, IS/-: fair, 16/- to 16/6: guL 14/to 15/6. Mutton, dark to dull, 15/- to 16/6; beef, dark to dull, 14/- to 15/6. Hemp—Manila: Market quiet and easier; shippers offer “K" grade down to £lB/15/-, up to March-May shipment. Sisal: Market steady. No. 1 neglected; closing value £l7 sellers, but more inquiry for No. 2. New Zealand: Conditions remain the same ; small lots common sold £lB/5/-. Apples and Pears —Good demand continues some instances. Prices have advanced. Britisli Columbian Newtowns, 9/6 to 11/-; British Columbia Delicious, 9/- to 10/-; Californian Winter Nelis, 9/6 to 10/-; Californian Beurre Bose, 11/6 to 12/-. Gold Mining Returns Argo Gold Dredging Company official return for the week ended January 21 was 630 z. in 137 hours and 15,000 yards. Kanieri Gold Dredging, Ltd., reports that the approximate dredge return for the first half of January was hours run, 102; cubic yards treated, 48,000; yield, 300 oz. smelted gold. Barrytown Gold Dredging reports for the first half of January: Hours, 214; yards. 93,000; yield, 2560 z. smelted gold. Returns of Mataki Junction for the four weeks ended January 12. with the December period in parentheses, are as follows: Hours dredged. 100 (522) ; cubic yards, 17.000 (77,000) : gold, lOOoz. (277 •oz.): work cost, — (£227). The dredge closed down on December 21 for holkViys and overhaul. January 17: Abnormally bad weather seriously delayed repairs. The value of gold for December period was £1748, and working cost £940. Wellington Alluvials The directors of Wellington Alluvials Limited announce that during the four weeks ended January 7. the dredge worked 290 hours, handling 136,000 cubic yards, and recovered bullion estimated Io contain 381 oz. of fine gold. The dredge was shut down on December 24 for installation of rock stacker and general overhaul. Dredging was resumed on January 9. Considerable difficulty has been experienced by the failure of buckets on the dredge and it will be necessary to replace these buckets at an early date. Steps are being taken accordingly. Dunedin Sheepskin Sale Dominion Special Service. DUNEDIN, January 21. A lair offering was submitted at the sheepskin sale today. Competition was fairly spirited and well spread, prices for sound-pelted descriptions being occasionally easier. Shabby, faulty, dead, damaged and inferior sorts were in good demand and sold round about last sale's rates. Pelts were pl. cheaper. Merinos sold up to 7i<l.. halfbreds to 7Jd., fine crossbreds to 7p1.,' crossbreds to 7;}<l.. fine crossbred lambs Io 7d., and halfbred hoggets to 7pl. Following is the official range of prices:—Merino, full-wool, 7<l. to 7|d. a lb.; fine lialfbretl, full-wool. 71(1. to 7}<l.; halfbred, full-wool, 7pl. to 73d.; three-quarter-wool, 7d. to 7:|d.; halfwool, spl. to Gpl.; quarter-wool. -lid. to sd.
