RICCARTON NOTES

Defaulter’s Ten Furlongs

MILE BY WILD CHASE

Progress Of Royal Chief

Dominion Special Service.

CHRISTCHURCH, January 14. The welcome rain which fell in the dis-

trict yesterday afternoon had a benelieia. effect on the Riccarton tracks. The inside of the trial grass, which was open this morning, provided excellent going

and some attractive gallops were recorded by horses booked to race at Trentham.

Paper Slipper and Counterblast galloped six furlongs in 1.154, the second three in 37j. Counterblast had Paper Slipper in trouble in the run home, and beat him comfortably. Trench Fight strode over seven furlongs' in 1.30, the first three in 37 2-5. f Wild'Talk went fast over the first part of a similar task, taking 1.28 3-5. Good Passage accompanied her over the last four in 52 3-5. Wardress ran half a mile in 51 2-5. This filly improved with every race she had on 'the West Coast circuit, and is destined for more important successes. She will be ridden in the .Apprentices’ Plato at Trentham on Thursday by R. Caddy. Much interest centred in a gallop be-

tween Night .Dress and Defaulter. They hopped off from the mile and a quarter post, and covered the first three furlongs in 35 3-5, and the first five in 1.2 2-5. six in 1.17. and completed the journey in 2.11 3-5. the last mile taking 1.43 3-5, and the last.half-mile 54 1-5. Defaulter did his usual-, solid work, and the performance of Night Dress was encouraging in view of his trip to Trentham. where he will be ridden by the Riccarton apprentice, A. Stokes, who -piloted him to victory in the Waikouaiti Cup. Wild Chase and Dictate were associated over a mile. They covered the first half in 50 1-5, five furlongs in 1.4, and the full journey in 1.41 4-5. They finished abreast, and while Wild Chase appeared to ibe doing the better work at the finish, Dictate did well in the face of suffering from heel trouble contracted at Ellerslie. His prospects at Trentham will defend on whether the track has a yielding surface. Garonne and Phalanx covered six furlongs in 1.17, the second three in 39. The former showed a return to his earlier good form at the West Coast meetings, and should shape well at Trentham. His owner, Mr. G. Hutter, Auckland, was present to see him work. The Sandwich Man was restricted to. a six-furlong gallop in 1.18 3-5. He will be ridden in the Wellington Cup by P. Syatt, and has to be accorded a favourable lightweight’s chance. Waka reeled off half a mile in 49, and Gay Parade ran the same distance along the back stretch in 50 2-5. Over hur-lles, Dividend (R. Register,, was always in front of Top Rank (A. (iS-tove) and Court Yard (A. Leach) in a bout Qver six hurdles. Supreme Court (M. Reilly) followed them over, the last four fences, and gave a very satisfactory display.

A Short Respite. Royal Chief will be an absentee from the tracks for a few days yet. It. is thought he bruised a heel on a stone when galloping on the course proper with Wild Chase last Thursday. He lias been eonlined to his box since, but his trainer hopes to have him in action again next week.
