RE-PAYING BEGUN
Work In Waterloo Quay
Work on the re-paving of Waterloo Quay, now part of the main entrance to Wellington, was begun by the city engineer’s department after the holiday break. The kerbing and channelling had previously been completed from Pipitea Wharf to Glasgow Wharf, and the graders are now at. work breaking up the bitumen surface, which motorists have lately found somewhat wavy, particularly the southern portion.
During the day there is a fairly constant stream of lorry traffic along Waterloo Quay to and from the wharves. As there is usually a line of parked cars on the west side of the road, the width of road left by the paving operations requires extra care on the part of drivers moving in either direction.
The kerbing of the service road, on the east side of Waterloo Quay, for the use of wharf and other commercial traffic, is also in progress.
By legislation passed in September, the portion of Waterloo Quay vested in the Wellington Harbour Board since 1880 was vested in the Wellington City Corporation as a street. The corporation agreed to reconstruct the quay ata cost of about £25.000, of which the Government agreed to contribute £7OOO and the corporation and harbour board the remainder in equal shares.
