NOT FOR SALE

Big Offer Refused For

Defaulter

Dominion Special Service.

CHRISTCiHURiUH, January 13,

An offer of 10,000 guineas was made this week for Defaulter, but Mr.. 11. IlGreenwood promptly declined it, Ull 'i stated that the colt was not for ® a *'-- Endeavours are being made to ger. both Defaulter and Royal Chief to the Dunedin Cup meeting next month, when a clash between them in the James Hazlett Gold Cup would be a great attraction. A decision regarding Defaulter's plans win not. be made till after the V\ ellington meeting. '

Royal Chief is booked for a trip to Wingatui, provided he fully recovers from a slight mishap which has been the cause of him being withdrawn from his. 'J rentham engagements. He galloped nine furlongs yesterday well, but was lame afterward, and it was found that he had bruised his off fore-heel. The trouble is yielding to treatment and, though not considered at all serious, it necessitated the colt being eased up.

Though the Australian visitors present at the Elderslie dispersal sale yesterday did not. make many purchases, several of the lots offered will probably find their way to Australia. There seems no doubt that the Australian demand for yearlings next week at Trentham will be even more pronounced than in receut yeans, as all of the visitors will have commissions to buy. . . The former Victorian trainer, C. Wheele, who opened the Elderslie sale by purchasing quietly for one of his clients, holds commissions to buy yearlings for owners in Victoria, South rVustralia, Queensland, and West Australia and, with the opposition likely to be forthcoming from other Australian trainers, including J. T. Jamieson and G. Price, prices for the best lots next week may reach a high level. Before the sale of brood mares at Elderslie was begun opportunity was taken of parading the Elderslie yearling colts which are to be offered at Trentham next week, and much interest was taken in the eight lots led into the ring. As each entered and was walked round,, his pedigree and credentials were explained by the auctioneer, Mr. C. E. Robertson, who ventured the opinion that during his. experience of Trentham yearling sales the Elderslie draft was the best ever sent from the stud. One colt who made a special appeal to the rimgsiders was a brown by Solicitor-General from Gobble (never raced), by Tea Tray from Fulsome, by Absurd from Eulogy. Others to attract marked attention were a bay colt' by Iliad from Graeiosa, dam of Might and Boomerang, and a chestnut colt by Iliad from Royal Flavour, a classic winner in Australia.
