Liner’s First Voyage Marred By Fire

AUCKLAND, January 13.

After an unfortunate first voyage which was marred by a fire early this week which caused severe damage to portion of the general cargo stowed in number three hold, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rimutaka will arrive from London early tomorrow morning and anchor in the stream. She will move alongside Queen’s Wharf at 8 o’clock. The Rimutaka, an oil-burning steamer of 16,600 tons gross, is commanded by Captain Lamb. Included in the 285 passengers brought by the Rimutaka are a number of notable visitors. There is also a group of seven medical men under appointment to the New Zealand Government to strengthen the staffs of mental hospitals. A gathering of welcome will b'e held on thp wharf by the New- Zealand Spanish Medical Aid Committee to mark the return of Sister Shadbolt, Auckland, and Nurse Todd, Wellington, who have been attached to the International Brigade in Spain for 21 months. A quantity of text books valued at £6OO is being carried by the liner to the order of the St. John Ambulance Association. The books comprise 20,000 volumes on preliminary first aid intended for use in schools throughout New Zealand and also 3000 ordinary first-aid books.
