80,000 SQUARE MILES OF LAND DISCOVERED
Ellsworth Claims New Area In Antarctic For U.S.A.
(Received January 12, 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 12.
“Eighty thousand square miles of land never seen before by human eyes has been added to the known area of the world's surface, and, following the precedent set by earlier discoveries, I have claimed this area for the United States,” says a copyright message from the explorer Lincoln Ellsworth, who, with Sir Hubert Wilkins, is on an expedition to the Antarctic.
“I have just completed a flight, on which I could see to latitude 74.30 south, on longitude .79 east, and, as our altitude in the flight was nearly 12,000 feet and the visibility perfect, I could see at least 150 miles on each side from the plane. “There are no mountains in this entire area, and, though it is snow-cov-ered, it might some years hence become free of snow and disclose rich mineral deposits.” .
