Preparing For State Fire Building Extension

ARCADIA HOTEL SITE

It is expected that within a month the site for the extension of tiie State Eire and Accident Insurance Building on the corner of Lambton Quay and Stout Street, Wellington, will be cleared. The demolition of the two storied brick and concrete building, with two shops on the ground floor, which for years has stood between the area at present occupied by the State Fire Building and the Arcadia Hotel iu Stout Street, is being carried out and will be completed soon. The demolition of the Arcadia Hotel, which is a four-storied building about 30 years old, is a bigger job. The premises were vacated at the end last week, and on Wednesday an auction sale was held of lloor coverings, electric light fittings, doors, window-s--in fact, everything that was movable. The sale attracted”a large attendance. The demolition of the Arcadia and the smaller building next, door is being carried out by the Fletcher Construction Co., Ltd., the contractors for the addition to the State Fire Building. When the addition is completed and also the big building adjoining m Stout Street for Government offices, the steel frame of wlieh is well under way, the Government will have there the largest block of State buildings in the country.
