NEW ZEALAND SINGER

Mary Hotham Returns From Interesting Tour

The well-known New Zealand singer, Mary Hotham, now Mrs. Harold Owens, Auckland, recently returned home from a twelve months’ trip abroad. During her travels she attended many music recitals, and while in England she had the opportunity of singing at an Empire broadcast. Mrs. Owens was very impressed with the music of the Germans, says the “Auckland Star.” “No matter what the conditions are in their country, they will always be a music-loving race,” she said.

Mrs. Owens said her most enjoyable experience from a musical point of view was a concert which she attended in Leipzig. The audience sat out in the open-air in complete darkness and listened for two hours to a magnificent string orchestra, the only lights being the miniature lights over each musician’s stand. When in England Mrs. Owens attended the Covent Garden Opera, hearing presentations of “Faust,” “La Boheme” and “die Meistersinger.” On leaving New Zealand a year ago Mrs. Owens and her husband spent two months in Australia and then travelled via tlie Dutch East Indies to England, spending a week in Egypt on the way. Six months were occupied In touring England and the Continent, after which they travelled to the United States. A week was spent in Honolulu before they connected with the Niagara for Auckland.
