BEGGARLY REWARD

Surprise and indignation were expressed in letters from readers of the “Daily Mail” at the £l/10/- reward given' by the L.N.E.R. to Mrs. Ada Milton. ' the 48-year-old wife of an unemployed labourer, who saved an express train. Mrs. Milton prevented the London-Norwich express from running into a telegraph post which had fallen across the line near Broxboiirne, Hertfordshire. She dashed along the permanent way during a storm and notified Broxboiirne officials 20 seconds before the express was due to pass. The only comment L.N.E.R. officials would make was: “The reward was a token of our appreciation of Mrs. Milton’s fine action. The company is seeing if it can find work for her husband.” . ,

When told that Mrs. Milton had been charged 1/6 for the telegraph post (which she intended to use lor firewood), an official said: “Usually we get 15/- for them, and the engineer had to show something in his account.”
